Friday Foto: Genbaku Dome [A-Bomb Dome]

Hiroshima, Japan

I just finished reading Sarah's Key by Tatiana de Rosnay, which intertwines the past and present of its characters by revealing a dark period in French history.  While it is a fictional story, many of the events are true, including the Vel d'Hiv Roundup of 1942, where thousands of French Jews were arrested and packed into the stadium under inhumane conditions and eventually transported to an extermination camp.  "Never forget" was repeated throughout the story, and I remembered our trip to Hiroshima earlier this year.  We visited the Atomic Bomb Dome and Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum.  Standing in front of the A-Bomb Dome was unreal, and 'til this day, I still have no words for it; and learning more stories about the tragic event and its effect on the local citizens that weighed heavily on me.  The A-Bomb Dome's preservation in a rebuilt city is a symbol of human destructiveness as well as hope for world peace in that it never happens again.  Never forget.
